01 · The profile

Background & perspective

Nathan Blecharczyk joined after Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia’s first hosting experiment. He brought the engineering capability needed to turn a local idea into a marketplace and later helped create Airbnb’s engineering, data science, payments and performance-marketing teams.1,2

His role later shifted toward initiatives spanning product, public policy and long-term stakeholder interests. Airbnb credits him with work on the City Portal for local governments and reservation-screening systems for identifying higher-risk bookings, two cases where software becomes a governance tool.1
